I've been working eight-hour shifts at work this week, so it's been really hard to find time to work on videos. I managed to get a video for the first day edited last night, and I'll try to get more soon, I swear!

Well, it's off to Austin in the morning! My flight leaves at 6:45am EST, and I arrive 11:30am CST. I will try to blog as often as I can while I'm down there, but I won't have any videos ready until I get back.

Total Money Raised So Far: $60.00 (Thanks, Brian!)

It's been almost two months since I began raising money for this campaign, and I have raised a total of $60 out of the $4000 I need. Thankfully, though, today I resumed reading a book I began a couple of weeks ago, titled Conducting a Successful Fundraising Program by Kent E. Dove. It had a lot of interesting ideas as to how to raise money.

One of the things Dove proposes is obtaining a mailing list from a similar organization or using a list broker. So perhaps after Christmas (or even sooner), I'll e-mail a couple of organizations and ask if they'd be willing to share their mailing list with me. Then, I plan on tying the trip in as part of a larger campaign (I've also been hoping to buy a new Mac and more equipment.). Much of the information I need to send out, I've already written out at one time or another, it's just a matter of compiling it and creating a mission statement.

Today I sent out a letter and press release to Current TV. Since I sent it snail mail rather than e-mail, I now regret not sending a DVD copy of How Mumblecore Saved My Life along with it. Well, if they respond, perhaps I'll mail it off.

I actually feel ready to raise money for this now. I plan on sending out more press releases to big news outlets soon.

The bad news? I've jacked the trip price to $4000. The good news? I've got a plan to raise the money.

Here's the plan: If I can get $5.00 from each and every one of you, I will be able to meet my goal of raising $4K by March 5th.

$4000 / $5 Donations = 800 People

Hypothetically speaking, I've already recieved donations from 11 people, so I have 789 people left to go. Hop to it, people!

I'm starting to think that PayPal Donations might not be enough for this fundraiser. I am thinking about holding some fundraiser concerts in January on top of what I'm doing now. I e-mailed the Lost Dog Lounge in Ithaca (you can see its Binghamton Counterpart in Are You From Bingo?), and as it turns out, they're programming independent films in the month of January.

Meanwhile, I got an e-mail from Brian Saturday night. He pointed me to this interview with Joe Swanberg, who's promoting his new web TV series Butterknife:

Karina: What was the last thing you saw on YouTube that made your eyes pop out of your head?

Joe: Kent Osborne makes really great YouTube videos that you can see at his page. He is a great documenter of events, and really captures the mood of things well. His short film, babycat aka: Good Luck With The World, is especially good. But to be totally honest, I think How Mumblecore Saved My Life was the last thing I saw that really shocked me. It was extremely weird for me to see that video. I’m still trying to process it.

And I, for one, am still trying to process that remark. However, this means that Mr. Swanberg might want to meet me, which means you might want to DONATE!!!

Throughout this whole fundraising thing, I've said that I would promise that I would make videos on the trip. For some reason, I've decided that the videos need to take center stage.

With most of the videos I make, I do them off the seat of my pants. I type up a script, set up my camera and mic, then tape, then edit. This time, I've got to think up a concept, an idea. These videos will be more cinematic than the stuff I usually do. I may rent a camera for the duration.

Which means the price of this trip may go up. I'm looking at Mopac Media, a camera company based out of Austin. The cameras I'm looking at to rent cost in the $400-$500 range. Which means now this trip may cost $3600-$3700. Oh my!

It's not that raising an extra $500 that's going to be daunting. I'm more than two weeks into this, and I've still only raised $55.

In other news, Quiet City and The Great World of Sound were nominated for the John Cassavetes award, and World of Sound was also nominated for best first feature. Congrats Aaron and Craig!

So I was having a little trouble connecting blogger to my server, which is why you're seeing week-old plus posts just now. But it's all better.

I sent out more press releases last night. At this point, I've hit up most of the people on the list Brian gave me. Sometime this week, I'm going to send out ones that I came up with on my own.

At this point, I can only think of the Dave Chappelle movie Half Baked, after he passes out the weed and says, "Let's Just Hope They Smoke It." Indeed.

Today at the Library, I checked out a travel guide on Texas, and I am planning on having a friend of my mom's check out a couple more books on Texas. This is so I can get an idea of things I want to do in Austin outside of SXSW.
